I recently got the DevKit and would like to do some coding on dll's for Metastock. I was wondering if I could get some opinions on which C++ compiler to learn and use. I have all of them but don't know any of them well.
There are a lot of books on c++ 6 and there are probably a lot of people with extensive knowledge. On the other hand .net and C# are what Micro$oft tells us we should be using. My workstation is XP so I am not sure how well c++6 will work {VB6 on XP doesen't mix well}.
I have lots of experience with VB & perl, so I have a decent understanding of coding. If I am going to dive into C, does anyone have suggestions on which flavour to lean to?

Vaughn,
I use Visual Studio 6 (SP5) on XP (SP2) and dont have any problems. I have had very little time to actually sit down and do much MS.dll coding but have not encountered any problems using Visual C++ compiler in Visual Studio to compile the .dll files.
Any more required? Please feel free to ask.

I've had nothing but grief from apps using .net
I would personally stay away from it.

Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect from others. Thought people might go for the latest and greatest. I was kind of leaning to C++ 6 but didn't know if I shoud climb on the .net bandwagon. There are plenty of samples and books on 6.
I have used VB for about 10 years and have yet to complete a single functional worthwhile app with .net.
I will check on some books and see what happens.

I have had a lot of good experience with .NET.
I have Visual Studio 6, 7, 2003, and 2005 all installed on the same machine with no problems.
C# is not currently supported by the MDK.
You might want to look at PowerBasic, since it is a lot like VB.
Or you could take a look at C++.NET so you can be up with the newer VS.

I have all of the Visual Studio versions as well. I loaded VS 2003 on my main machine, but never use it. I created a virtual machine specifically with C++6, some CBTs for 6, as well as samples. There were also a couple decently rated books on 6 so that is the way I am headed. I have never actually heard of PowerBasic, been a Microsoft groupie for too long I guess  . I might look into it.
The big thing for me is the new functionality the ForumDll has. It will take me a while to explore what that can do for my coding. I have other projects I need C++ knowledge for, hopefully that will give me the proper motivational boost to open the books.

I haven't personally used PowerBasic, but it is supposed to be an easy transition from VB.
Good luck with the C++ if that is the route you take. There are good samples and information in the manual to help you along your way.
