Yes, that makes sense and shouldn't be too hard to do after I get everything else done.

This post is just to let you guys know I am still working on this. It is going a lot slower than I expected.
Since it is a lot more work than I thought to get the symbol database reading part done, I figured I'd work on something a bit easier first that would still be helpful.

I am currently working on getting the Delete securites not traded for X days functionality.
This part doesn't need the symbol database or any specific version of MetaStock.
I'll let you guys know when it is ready and I might need to get a few people willing to test it rather than just posting it since it is(would be) far from done.

Status update:
Okay, I have a version (very roughly done) that takes a specified folder location (must contain security files) and will delete any that haven't been updated in X days.

It (as of this posting) does not go through the folders recursively (it will do only the specified folder and no subfolders).

No other options in the program currently work.
As is though, it could be pretty handy in cleaning up your local securities by getting rid of ones that aren't trading anymore.

Please message me if you're interested in testing this. I'll message you back with a location to download the program.

REMEMBER: This program isn't endorsed or supported in any way by Equis International or me. I'm doing this in order to help people, but am not able to claim that it will work 100% of the time. Just keep in mind all the usual waivers of liability and that Reuters, Equis, nor I can be held responsible for any damage done by this product. Also remember this is a very alpha version.

Since I started this, of course I am willing to give it a try. Let me know where.

Well, I'll just post the link here.
The zip containing the program and the .dll is on my personal server here.

Next for this function, I'm going to add a message box that says how many securities were deleted, message boxes containing errors if it couldn't delete the securities, the ability to force itself into a folder if needed, and a recursive folder option to scan subfolders of the specified location.

I'll give status updates here when I put up new versions.

Again, please let me know if you find any problems or have any suggestions.

On second thought, I have posted it to the Files area. This will allow me to update what the program can and cannot currently do as well as allow people to subscribe to get notified when I update it.

You can now find it here in the Files section of the forum.

Along with moving the file, I added a message box that tells you how many securities were deleted when it is done.

I apologize, but I have been asked to remove the utility until it is complete.
If it does ever get finished sometime in the future, it will hopefully be posted again.

Thank you for your support.

I have been (re)granted permision to post the utility again and keep it postetd.
It is once again in the file section and has been updated to include a functioning Browse button.
I have started work on it again and will work on finishing off the current function of deleting securities not traded for X days by adding a recursive option and fixing any issues.

As another reminder, this is a product with (currently) little testing and is not at all endorsed, supported, or anything else by Reuters or Equis.

Please download the utility and give it a try on some sample data and let me know if you find any problems or have any suggestions to make it easier or better.

Thanks for sticking with it, Branden; I'll d/l and take a look at it.

Suggest you start a new thread, or rename this one to a more meaningful name, if you want to draw attention to it for testing by other forum members.

Been working no problems for me.

BTW Thanks for all this. I am just getting into doing breadth analysis and ERSA so my former manual methods of changing and updating will becode way too difficult to keep active. This util when done will be the ticket.

You're welcome, sorry I can't get it done faster.

I've become quite busy lately, but I'm hoping to add another function to the utility this week.
